Al-Qur’an dengan segala keistimewaannya adalah kitab suci yang patut untuk dihormati. Dalam posisinya sebagai kitab suci inilah kemudian al-Qur’an menjadikan dirinya sebagai sebuah pedoman hidup yang absolut. Konsekuensi teologisnya adalah bahwa Al-Qur’a>n harus melebur dirinya untuk dipahami yang untuk kemudian diamalkan dan diyakini dalam kehidupan sehari-hari umat Islam. Dalam ungkapan singkatnya, William A. Graham, menyatakan bahwa al-Qur'an merupakan ,"A canonical writing is something people ready and study, a scripture something people live by and for"1. Quraish Shihab menyebutnya bahwa hal ini menunjukan al-Qur'an menempati posisi sentral dalam studi Islam.
