Studi psikologi tidak hanya terbatas kepada manusia, tetapi juga mempelajari tingkah laku hewan. Studi tentang tingkah laku hewan int tidak akan dibabas dalam tulisan ini. Nampaknya juga, bahwa definisi-definisi di atas, sekalipun berbeda-beda pada hakekatnya mempunyai beberapa persamaan yang dikonsensuskan ke dalam satu definisi yang dapat diterima oleh semua pihak. Oleh Karena itu penulis cenderung untuk merumuskan definisi seperti di bawah ini.
