Di dalam al-Qur’an banyak ayat-ayat yang mene-rangkan umat-umat masa lalu seperti kisah-kisah para nabi dan cerita tentang umat masa lalu.Kisah-kisah dalam al-Qur’an tidak dikemukakan secara detail karena motifnya sebagai ibarat. Kitab-kitab Samawi yang lain seperti Taurat dan Injil kisah-kisah semacam ini dije-laskaan secara ter-perinci. Banyak ilmuan ahli kitab yang masuk Islam, mereka mendapatkan kesamaan antara isi kitab-kitab mereka dengan al-Qur’an. Mereka ikut menafsirkan al-Qur’an dengan cerita-cerita yang mereka kuasai dari kitab Taurat atau Injil. Cerita-cerita yang digunakan menafsirkan al-Quran ini disebut Israiliat, sekalipun dilakukan oleh mantan penganut agama Nasrani karena yang dominan adalah dari agama Yahudi, dan umat Nasrani juga menggunakan kitab orang Yahudi yang disebut Perjanjian Lama.
