The problem related to this research is how the development of the madzhab of freedom of thought in modern pesantren. The purpose of this study is to identify the nature of the development of madhhab and freedom of thought and to analyze the development of madzhab of freedom of thought in modern pesantren. This research uses descriptive-analytic method with a qualitative approach. This approach has the following characteristics: (a) direct data sources in reasonable situations, (b) descriptive, (c) prioritizing processes rather than products or results, (d) descriptive data analysis, and (e) prioritizing meaning. Based on the results of research on the development of the Freedom of thought school in modern Islamic boarding schools, this is related to freedom of thought in acknowledging things that are considered positive. in this case the development of the Islamic boarding school Freedom of Thinking or Freedom of Expression in modern boarding schools aims to broaden the knowledge of the Islamic boarding school community and take a deeper look at science. If the pesantren community does not follow the freedom of thought, a much more advanced situation will leave them far behind. In general, schools are the place of return for reference to fiqh, the guidance of Muslims known as the four schools of thought, namely the Maliki, Hanafi, Shafi`I, and Hanbali schools. True mazhab can be achieved by acknowledging that our understanding of sectarian differences of opinion is something that is healthy and natural, not something that is complicated or deviates from Islam.
