Sebagai seorang pemikir orisinil, kebesaran Iqbal sesungguhnya terletak pada sikapnya yang bebas kritis dalam menghadapi alam pemikiran Timur dan Barat, baik yang ada kaitannya dengan Islam maupun tidak, yang Klasik maupun yang modern. Serta berusaha untuk mensintesakan unsur-unsur yang paling menonjol dari keduanya sehingga melahirkan suatu oksidasi vital yang digerakkan jiwa dan aktifitas. Walaupun Iqbal produk dua macam sistem pendidikan, Timur dan Barat, namun amanatnya tidak hanya ditujukan kepada dunia Timur dan Barat saja. Namun ditujukan kepada seluruh kemanusiaan, yang mengisyaratkan keuniversalannya.
Makalah ini berusaha untuk mengenalkan pemikiran-pemikiran Iqbal, perjalanan hidupnya, karya-karyanya. Pemikiran-pemikiran pembaharuan Iqbal yang berusaha membangunkan “tidur lelapnya” ummat Islam akan menjadi tema utama makalah ini.
