Berdasarkan ayat al-Qur’an, digambarkan bahwa bumi pada mulanya menempel atau menyatu dengan kumpulan galaksi yang lain beserta planet-planet atau benda-benda langit lainnya dalam sebuah bola besar. Lalu bumi yang ada di bagian celah bola besar tersebut, akibat letusan bola besar ini terbanting dan bagian bumi yang menempel tadi menjadi cekungan lautan dan samudra, serta sebagian lain yang terkena dentuman besar itu pun juga menjadi cekungan pula, lalu bola besar itu membelah, terbongkar, serta membengkak hingga pecah mengeluarkan dengannya termasuk air. Hasil pemecahan bola besar itulah yang kemudian menjadi benda-benda langit atau galaksi-galaksi selain bumi.
